Constellation
The LeoSat system is being developed in conjunction with Thales Alenia Space, a company with unmatched expertise in designing and manufacturing low earth orbit constellations.  The high-throughput satellites (HTS) will form a mesh network interconnected through laser links, creating an optical backbone in space which is about 1.5 times faster than terrestrial fiber backbones, thus creating a paradigm shift in the use of satellites for data connectivity – rather than a gap filler or last resort where no terrestrial alternative is available.  LeoSat will offer a highly secure and ubiquitous service that can rival and often beat fiber in terms of latency. LeoSat's first satellite with early services will be available at the end of 2019.

The Most Advanced Commercial Satellite System Ever Built
For data communications, LeoSat’s unique system has many advantages. The satellite constellation will provide customers with very high throughput, low-latency and highly-secure communications between any two or more locations on earth, independent of existing terrestrial networks.  This is achieved through deploying optical inter-satellite links (ISLs) which connect the satellites, creating fiber-like symmetric connectivity with speeds of up to 1.6 Gbps and even 5.2 Gbps where needed. A customer uses their LeoSat terminal to uplink data to the nearest satellite where the data is then routed by an on-board processor to the customer’s second location to complete the circuit.  Internet traffic can be terminated in one of LeoSat’s gateways, which will be strategically located around the globe.  Contrary to bent-pipe HTS solutions, gateways are not a pre-requisite for LeoSat to operate its network.  For customers, this unique use of technology allows for premise-to-premise connections with no terrestrial touch-point in-between and sets a new bar for high-speed networks.

Satellites
The LeoSat system is harnessing existing and proven satellite technology but deploying it a new and unique way to meet the needs of customers.  Key technology advances that enhance LeoSat’s system are optical inter-satellite links, flat panel antennas, optimized Ka-band communications and semiconductor processing.
Each satellite in the LeoSat constellation supports:

  • 10 Ka-band steerable user antennas, each of which is capable of providing customer terminals with between 50 Mbps and 1.6 Gbps of symmetrical data connectivity
  • Two steerable gateway antennas, capable of an aggregated throughput of up to 10 Gbps (which can also be used for customer traffic when not over a gateway)
  • 4 optical inter-satellite links

Ground Segment
The LeoSat constellation is designed for enterprise users who will use business grade ground equipment.  LeoSat will operate in Ka-band and there are already a number of ground systems available in the market today capable of accessing the system.  In addition, with the tremendous innovations in ground systems spurred by the development of HTS mobility systems for Maritime and In-Flight connectivity, we expect that by the time we launch our constellation, our customers will have an even greater range of options when it comes to choosing the ground system equipment which best suits their solution.  Whether it is a traditional parabolic system or the more high-tech systems using phased array flat panel antennas, the LeoSat constellation will be accessible with many ground systems and unlike other LEO systems, the LeoSat constellation will not be dependent on the development of one single system.
